If you feel fatigued on a regular basis, the answer to energizing yourself might be getting up and performing light physical activities. It might be the last thing you want to do when you are tired, but physical activity powers your heart and lungs, providing lasting extra energy. In addition, just getting your body moving delivers more oxygen to your muscles and can banish fatigue in a few minutes. Try to find a few activities to give you extra energy and perform them regularly for a midday or midweek boost.

Stretching and Yoga

A simple morning, midday or nighttime stretch helps alleviate tension in your joints, relaxes your muscles and gets your blood flowing. Stretches elongate your muscles and provide your body with an energy boost. Ask a certified physical trainer or your health care professional to demonstrate basic stretches and teach you proper form to help prevent injury. Try stretching when you wake up, on your break at work or after a long day. Yoga, a light physical activity based around stretching, deep breathing and muscle stability, can also provide energy.

Exercising

Even light exercise, such as walking around the block with your dog, activates your muscles and boosts your energy. If the thought of exercise makes you feel drained, find a physical activity you enjoy. Hiking, swimming, walking, dancing, rollerblading and skipping rope are all ideal candidates. If you do not have time specifically for exercise, work it into your day by doing calf raises while brushing your teeth or performing crunches and squats while you watch TV. If you want a more defined workout, you can attend Pilates, aerobics or spinning classes. Working in just five minutes of exercise in your down time is enough to oxygenate your muscles and increase your energy.

Basics

The boost of oxygen from breathing deeply, in for three seconds and out for two seconds, for one minute can help you stay alert and energized for hours. Sniffing citrus fruit can boost brain activity and increase your energy levels. Splashing some cool water on your face often provides the fresh, clean feeling you need to get on with the rest of your activities. Experiment. Try things that have made you feel refreshed or energized in the past.

Warning

If you constantly feel tired, it can be a sign of a medical problem, poor diet, nutrient deficiency, dehydration or lack of sleep. Consult a health care professional to assess the cause of your fatigue if it persists for more than one week.
